Which potassium source: MOP, SOP, nitrate or K-Mag?

Five potassium products at five different strengths, each bringing a different second element with it. The potassium figure alone will not tell you which to buy.

The short answer. On our published grades: potassium chloride (MOP) is the strongest at 60% K2O, potassium sulphate (SOP) is 50% K2O, 18% S, potassium nitrate is 13% N, 46% K2O, potassium magnesium sulphate is 22% K2O, 11% Mg, 22% S and potassium schoenite is 19% K2O, 6% Mg. The strongest is not automatically the right one, because each brings something different alongside the potassium.

What comes with the potassium

MOP is the most concentrated source on this list, and the cheapest per unit of potassium in most markets. The potassium arrives with chloride. SOP brings sulphur instead. Potassium nitrate brings nitrogen. The two magnesium-bearing salts bring magnesium and, in one case, a substantial sulphur figure as well.

So the decision is rarely about potassium strength. It is about whether the accompanying element is wanted, tolerated, or a problem in your particular application — and that is a question about your process, not about the salt.

Potassium magnesium sulphate and potassium schoenite

These two are close relatives and are frequently confused, so it is worth setting the published figures side by side: potassium magnesium sulphate at 22% K2O, 11% Mg and 22% S, and potassium schoenite at 19% K2O and 6% Mg. They are not interchangeable, and a purchase order that names one when it means the other will be filled as written. How to compare two quotes honestly

Where two products carry the same element at different strengths, the price per kilogram of bag is not a comparison. Divide the delivered price per kilogram by the element fraction and you get the cost per kilogram of the thing you are actually buying. That is the only basis on which grades of different strength can be set against each other.

Freight follows the same logic: moving a weaker grade means paying to move more material that is not the element.

Which one should you buy?

That is decided by your process, and by things we cannot see from here: how the product is applied, what it is blended with, what has to dissolve and how fast, the specification you or your customer must meet, and how far the material travels. Any supplier who answers that question without asking about your process is guessing.
